The success and wealth of this Norse  hersir, or chieftain, is evident by his possession of an iron helmet, sword, chain mail shirt and embroidered tunic. An engraved "Hammer of Thor" pendant marks his devotion to the pre-Christian Nordic gods. His cloak is clasped at the right shoulder with a "thistle" brooch to keep his sword arm free. His wooden shield with iron boss is painted red and black, the colors of war and death.
